Defence representation in London covers all Defence policy issues, issues of a joint operational nature, specific Single Service matters of all three Services (Navy, Army and Air Force), and a broad range of acquisition, industry and science activities.

Australia House Defence Personnel

The Australian Defence Staff London operates under a Joint Directive from the Chief of the Defence Force and the Secretary.

Head of Australian Defence Staff (HADS)

The position of HADS brings a whole-of-department approach to the direction in which the London Post moves. It also allows access to the higher end of the policy spectrum within the MoD and to Ministers.
 

Navy

The Naval Adviser represents the Royal Australian Navy in the UK and in Europe where there is no Australian Defence representative. He is responsible for liaison with the MoD, the Royal Navy, British Defence Industry and for managing all RAN personnel in the UK. He also provides maritime advice to HADS and works on strategic and Human Resource Management issues.
 

Army

The Army Adviser represents the Australian Army in the UK and in Europe where there is no Australian Defence representative. He is responsible for liaison with the UK MoD, the British Army, UK Defence Industry and is the Formation Commander for all Australian Army personnel serving in the UK and with the British Army in Germany. He also provides military advice to the HADS and in particular, on operational matters.

Air Force

The Air Adviser represents the Royal Australian Air Force in the UK and in European nations without an accredited Australian Defence representative. The Air Adviser is responsible for liaison on air matters with the UK MoD, the Royal Air Force, UK Defence Industry, and command of RAAF personnel serving with the UK Armed Forces. The Air Adviser advises and informs HADS on air matters and broad capability issues.

Defence Materiel

The Counsellor Defence Materiel (CONDMAT) represents the interests of the Defence Materiel Organisation in the UK and Europe and is the head of the DMO London office. CONDMAT maintains a strong liaison with counterparts from the UK’s Ministry of Defence, particularly the Defence Equipment and Support organisation, links with other defence acquisition organisations across Europe and links with regional defence industry. 

Procurement

The Procurement team is responsible for all procurement activities that are assigned to the DMO London office, including inviting tenders; analysis of bids; selection; negotiation of terms and conditions; contract placement and contract management. The section also arranges support activities such as shipment of supplies and freight management activities; export licence facilitation; quality assurance; technical, legal and financial audit services within the supplier’s host country.

Commercial

The commercial unit directly supports CONDMAT, representing DMO in the region. We maintain knowledge of UK and European defence sector activity and can respond to queries about Australia’s defence acquisition and sustainment initiatives, policies and strategies. We support Defence ‘Team Australia’ engagement at shows and events and work with both internal DMO stakeholders and external organisations to bring a Whole of Government approach as appropriate. We can advise on recent developments in Australian defence industry programs, as well as the structure and make up of Australia’s defence industry. We can also provide guidance on the international aspects of business opportunities in current and future Australian Defence programs. 
 

Defence Liaison

Defence Science

The Counsellor Defence Science (Defence Science & Technology Organisation DSTO) is to provide liaison with the UK and Europe on defence science and technology matters, representing the interests of DSTO in these countries. Establish and maintain liaison on scientific and technical matters with Ministers, research and development establishments, universities, and industries. DSTO's objective is to give advice that is professional, impartial, and informed on the application of science, technology that is best suited to Australia's defence, and security needs.
