Marriage in Australia (for visitors)

It is possible for visitors to marry in Australia provided the necessary arrangements have been made beforehand. There is no residential qualification required. Marriages do not have to be conducted in a Church or Registry Office - this matter should be discussed with the Marriage Celebrant (i.e. the person who will perform the marriage ceremony).

Notice of Intended Marriage

A "Notice of Intended Marriage" (NOIM) form should be obtained from the person performing the wedding ceremony in Australia or click here to download the form.

The NOIM must be signed in the presence of and witnessed by either:

▪ a UK Notary Public (look in the Yellow Pages phone book under "Notaries" or "Notaries Public" or contact a UK solicitor's office); or

▪ an Australian Consular Officer at the Australian High Commission in London

Once witnessed, the NOIM form should be sent to the Marriage Celebrant or to friends or relatives in Australia if they are arranging the wedding.

The Marriage Celebrant must receive the NOIM at least one month and a day prior to the date of the proposed wedding but not more than eighteen months before. The Marriage Celebrant will advise you of any additional documents to supply before the wedding can take place.
